Christine Cohun - Art
Schedule: I meet with the students at the Grafton School on Monday
Art at the elementary level consists of exploring materials, methods and techniques, while emphasizing the basic elements of design; which are shape, color, texture and form.
My goal is for children to see what is around them - to discover themselves and their environment. As motivation, I try to choose projects that coincide with the seasons - to draw on individual personal experiences as well as encourage new interests.
During the months of January and February students are working in the following areas:
K - preliminary strategies for structures - bending, folding, cutting and curling paper
-creating a habitat
1st - using basic shapes to create a 3-D mask - including cutting, curling paper
2nd - extending the strategies of making structures from paper - how do you find balance in your structure
- students will be working on a community project for Valentines Day
3rd/4th - creating a paper mask - with the theme- A Day at the Opera - enhancing their creation with glitter, feathers, ribbon, pompoms and other exciting materials.
5th/6th - Students have been working on one-point perspective, they explored this process by creating boxes, and as a culminating activity they are doing a composition of a house or building with a background. The composition will be completed in watercolor. This project has proved to be very challenging, students have learned about the horizon line, a vanishing point, perspective lines, using parallel lines and just staying focused on their drawing.
